I feel that with 75% of cost of the solar inverter system taken by solar PV, if the prices of solar PV inverters fall at a certain rate (say more than 30%) then it will make the MNRE rooftop subsidy irrelevant. The way out could be GOI fights backs with duties on imports. Prices might find support at those levels. So the Indian middle class might easily agree for that inverter price point. That price point is still far away.
I feel the easiest to sell would be Retrofit system for existing Inverter battery systems already installed by the house owners. The problem is price. After spending 18-20 K on that , they are reluctant to spend another 50-60 k on solar inverters, and other accessories . Another issue is non availability of Bank Fianace for such systems at reason intt. ( Personal Loans are too costly). In India even corporates think twice before they make an attempt to invest on Solar projects, i am of the opinion its a long way to go for Roof Top Systems/Solar inverter systems to get the acceptance of the majority of the middle class.
