What is Closed Suction System ?
The Closed Suction System is intended for removal of secretion in the lower respiratory track in patients receiving prolonged mechanical ventilation. The filter protected system is connected to the artificial airway of the patient ( Endotracheal or Tracheostomy tube) and to the ventilation circuit. It is used over a period of 24 hours,72 hours ( depending on the patient requirement ).

When and why to use closed suction system ?
1: Traditional secretion suction should cut off patient’s breathing airway, so nurse has to finish suction in 30 seconds. If use closed suction system, DO NOT need to cut off patient oxygen airway.
2: Suppose closed suction system is reused for 48 hours, the average cost is almost the same as using traditional suction catheters. For example: If a ICU patient need extract secretion 30 times a day on average, 48 hours is 60 times, it means he need to use 60 pcs traditional suction catheters. Let’s suppose closed suction system cost USD4.5 per piece, average cost is USD0.075 each time.
3: It reduce cross-infection during extraction secretion
In the closed suction system, each suction catheter is covered by a sleeve. Patient’s secretion will not splash when pull out catheter from patient’s end. So it reduce cross-infection between patients and nurses in the same room.
