Power Supplies
Description
Let& acute;s speculate a little on what the variable frequency drive proponent might have been thinking. He sees a fan running at a fixed speed and a gas burner cycling between high and low fire to maintain temperature. He thinks to himself, & quot;There is some lower fan speed at which I can maintain temperature without cycling between low fire and high fire. Running a fan at lower speed generates significant electricity savings. This is a good application for variable frequency drive.& quot;
If we consider the same example as resented and that the price of a variable frequency drive is determined by its current rating (i.e. power rating), by reducing the motor size we can reduce the investment cost of the application.
My opinion is that the E-Stop for each variable frequency drive is good, inexpensive insurance. The built in stop button on most variable frequency drives is small, and in an emergency it is nice to have that big red switch for the operator to smack. If the motors are remote (out of line of sight) from the panel then you definitely want an E-Stop adjacent to the motor, and I recommend the maintained type with twist to release. If you have any other protective devices (motor temp switches or such) you just put the E-Stop in series with them.
A direct online motor has a breakdown torque typically in the region of 220% of the motor’s rated torque, whereas a variable frequency drive is limited to a value of about 150%. If variable frequency drive application calls for the motor to continue running through random events of high overload conditions, then the variable frequency drive must be oversized accordingly.
