Brominated epoxy oligomers are prepared in several ways. One method involves the reaction of Tetrabromobisphenol-A and epichlorohydrin. This can give materials having molecular weights from as low as 1600 to as high as 60,000 with bromine contents ranging from 52 to 54%.
In some cases, the terminal epoxy groups are capped by reacting with phenol or tribromophenol to improve thermal stability.
End capping with phenol lowers the bromine content slightly whereas end capping with tribromophenol raises it slightly.

The lower molecular weight products are used primarily in styrenic resins, e.g., HIPS and ABS while the higher molecular weight products are used in engineering thermoplastics, e.g., PBT. In HIPS and ABS.
It?offer good flow and UV resistance and its?effect on physical properties is difficult to characterize because it is dependent on the molecular weight.
It has very good thermal stability and thermal ageing;
It does not send off poisonous substance when thermal cracking and burning, exhibiting good UV resistance and excellent process ability, non-blooming, was especially recommended for the thermoplastic polyesters PBT, PET, etc.
