Description
Uses
Maleic anhydride is used primarily in the formation of unsaturated polyester resins for use in boats, autos, trucks, buildings, piping, and electrical goods. Lube oil adhesives synthesized from maleic anhydride are used to prolong oil-change intervals and improve engine efficiency. Maleic anhydride is also used to make copolymers, pesticides, and other organic compounds, and in Diels-Alder syntheses. Maleic anhydride in Organic industry used for the manufacture of fumaric acid and tetrahydrofuran. It used as a chemical reagent in analytical chemistry.
Maleic and fumaric acid are both dicarboxylic acid isomers that are similar in molecular structure. Maleic acid can be converted to fumaric acid by first converting it using heat. Exposure to water then converts this chemical substance into fumaric acid. A device called a reflux condenser is used to precipitate the fumaric acid as it is heated within a flask. During this process, crystals of fumaric acid form. The solid crystals can then be isolated using a vacuum filtration.
You can also use Maleic Anhydride to make Malic Acid for Wine. Malic acid provides the tart flavor in soft drinks and wine. It is commonly found in apples, cherries and other fruits. Malic acid converts to lactic acid after time. Therefore, the taste of wine changes over time and fermentation. Making malic acid directly from fruits requires the use of a chemical reactor. Since most people do not have one in their home, convert malic acid from maleic anhydride. Maleic anhydride is available at specialty food stores and pharmacies.

Hazardous
Acute inhalation exposure of humans to maleic anhydride has been observed to cause irritation of the respiratory tract, burning in the larynx, reflex cough, lacrimation, headaches, eye irritation, and corneal burns (that healed within 48 hours).
