# The hormone 17-hydroxyprogesterone is a building block for producing the hormone cortisol. Cortisol is produced mainly by the adrenal cortex (the outer part of the two adrenal glands, located above the kidneys). Cortisol is called the & quot;stress hormone& quot; because it& acute;s secreted in larger amounts as part of the body& acute;s response to physical or emotional stress.In kids, the most common cause of cortisol deficiency, and consequently high levels of 17-hydroxyprogesterone, is one of the forms of the genetic disorder congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH).
# 17-hydroxyprogesterone is elevated in patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). CAH is a group of autosomal recessive diseases characterized by a deficiency of cortisol and an excess of ACTH concentration. 17-hydroxyprogesterone is also useful in monitoring cortisol replacement therapy and in evaluating infertility and adrenal and ovarian neoplasms.

17A-hydroxyprogesterone is an important intermediate in the synthesis of steroidal corticosteroid and steroidal progesterone drug. It is used in the synthesis of betamethasone, hydrocortisone, hydroxyprogesterone caproate, cortisone acetate, chlormadinone, etc.
